Pictured is a sunset down 34th Street, a phenomenon known as 'Manhattanhenge' that only happens a few times a year when the sunset aligns with the Manhattan street grid. Sunsets mark the transition of day to night, of light to dark. This photo reminds me of my transition to living in the city, with its bright excitements but also its murky uncertainties. As the sun began to set, people poured into the streets to gawk and take photos. Traffic was stopped and the vehicles even stopped honking; for a brief moment, all attention was turned to appreciating the view of the setting sun. And very quickly after sunset, the crowds dispersed, streets cleared, and the cars were moving again--everything returned to normal. New York is bustling with people, each of whom have their own goals and struggles, hopes and sorrows, dreams and difficulties. Here was a clear reminder of how we all go through individual transitions as we move through life, but we are all connected by the shared experiences of our changing environment.
